Georgia DeBranco-Chessum - Evaluation - Questions 3-4

3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

If we were given the chance for a company to distribute our film there would be many companies that would be happy to take the project on. Due to the nature of our film, it is likely that British independent film companies such as Film4 or the British Film Institute would help make our film. This is because it is low budget, we use our own props and locations and the actors and directors are all unknown, which is typical of the Independent British films that they distribute. Film4 would be ideal for our film as they distribute films to give opportunity and for growth of the film and industry rather than for profit.

However, Film 4 have a production deal with Universal Pictures, so this could gain international attention and therefore give our film growth. Also, they distribute and co-produce films that are, in some ways, similar in nature to our product, such as ‘Trainspotting (1996)’ and ‘The Riot Club (2014) [co-produced with BFI Film Fund, Blueprint Pictures]’. These have similar themes to our film such as crime, psychological themes and murder, and also have a similar target audience. Due to their successes and popularity after release, we could assume that our film may gain popularity if released with Film4 productions, as their audiences obviously enjoy these genres.

When advertising the film, it would be beneficial to promote in many different forms. For example, a hugely popular method of advertising would be on social media. Forums such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and YouTube would gain a huge viewing from our target audience of teens aged 15 to people in their late 20s, as they are widely used by the younger generation and it had proved to be an effective method of advertisement. Also, TV advertisement would hugely benefit as we are advertising to a wide range of people at different times of day, so it would gain a higher recognition in the public. There are also more traditional methods of advertisement that would be beneficial, such as in newspapers and magazines, billboards and posters on buses. This is because they are always around and so it is likely to catch someone’s eye and then make them curious about the film.
4) Who would be the audience for your media product?
Our target audience was people aged 15 to people aged in their late 20s. This is because, while conducting our audience research, we found that thriller films were most popular among this age group. 15 is the lowest age we are targeting our film at as it was certified at 15. Our film is mainly aimed at males, as they stereotypically love thriller films.
This is Jack Carter. He is 20 years old, and a 3rd year University student who is studying Psychology at the University of Kent. Due to this interest, his favourite film genre is psychological thrillers. He enjoys both playing and watching football with his friends, and is also a fan of American Football. He works part time as a sports coach at the local gym. He enjoys spending time with his friends and going to the cinema. His favourite TV shows include ‘The Blacklist’ and ‘The Last Ship’, and has a keen interest in music, particularly rappers Drake, Kanye West and bands such as Fall Out Boy. Jack is a perfect example of our target audience, as he could relate to the ‘normal’ characters in the film, and would find our plot interesting and gripping.
