Thriller sub-genre



Comedy thriller: like an action thriller this can be implemented in any of the listed genres below. A comedy thriller can be a horror, crime or spy thriller with an added purpose to make the audience laugh and yet still keep the spy or whatever theme that is intended however focusing on the comical side. An example of this type of film would be Get Smart.

Conspiracy thriller: This type of film normally has a journalist or an investigator who discovers something small. Further investigating into the matter chosen unveils a secret that would affect the public, usually for the bad, and is found that the person behind the plan is a very powerful individual or group e.g. the president or government of a nation. The film is usually resolved by some form of act that may include violence or be something simple as in announcing the secret to the public. Examples of this type of thriller include “The Da Vinci Code”, “Logan’s Run”.

Crime thriller: this genre is generally about a fictional or a real life criminal act such as a robberies, heists or killings that were successful. These films are usually told in the view of the criminals and in some ways portrays them as the good guys. The main event such as the heist is normally carried out at the end of the film with the suspense being made by the build up to the main event which is normally the planning of the crime. A good example of this type of film would be original 1969 British film “The Italian Job”

Erotic thriller: this thriller has some kind of intimate relationship between two or more people. This romance plays an important role within the plot however it is normally not part of the main events. These films are usually for older teenagers and adults due to the sexual content along with the other intertwining features that make the film a thriller e.g. action, violence and horror

Action thriller: this type of thriller can be incorporated in almost every thriller genre. It involves a fair amount of action to the film with fighting, shooting and car chases. With an action thriller usually someone dies at the end in order for the situation, whatever that may be, to be resolved. Examples of this type of thriller involve The Expendables, The Bourne Franchise and The Dark Night Rises.

Psychological thriller: a fictional film with its characters suffering from some kind of psychological state. This character could be mentally challenged or suffer from hallucinations. These films often have some detective investigative work and incorporate action, drama and horror to the genre. The majority of these films of this kind focus on the horror side the genre.

Spy thriller: this genre usually has some kind of spy as the protagonist normally working for his or her government. The most famous collection of films for this type of film. The protagonist would need to fight a villain or another agent of another government whose plans are either to conquer or destroy the world. Examples of this type of thriller would be the entire James Bond franchise.

Supernatural thriller: this thriller is usually a horror film e.g. The Ring, The Grudge. The film has to have some kind of supernatural being for example a ghost. Features such as jump scares, darkly lit rooms and music that adds to the tense situations and this horror makes these thrillers usually have an age group of 15 and over. More often or not these films have a tendency for the protagonist to fail and the evil being to continue supernatural activities.  

Techno thriller: rather like a sci-fi film a techno thriller has a story that involves some kind of sophisticated technology that plays a major part of the plot. Whether that is some kind of advanced weaponry or a computer system. An obvious setting for this type would be in the future. An example of a techno thriller would be “I Robot”

Disaster thriller: This genre involves an event that is usually naturally caused (such as a volcanic eruption or a tsunami) and following the point of view of the victims and possible a hero that saves those victims. The story usually starts as a normal day when the disaster occurs in a dramatic and normally violent fashion. At the end of these films the disaster would’ve past and life would begin to return to normal.
